The community within the Hunters Hill Municipality, and the wider community concerned about its heritage significance, today welcomed the announcement by the Minister for Local Government, The Hon. Tony Kelly MLC, that he would not be submitting the Ryde City Council’s proposals for boundary changes to the NSW Boundaries Commission.

Ryde City Council had submitted proposals for boundary changes to the Minister that would have seen the destruction of the Hunters Hill Municipality.

Hunters Hill is the nation’s most significant heritage Municipality. Justice Barry O’Keefe, President of the National Trust, has stated “its heritage would be seriously at risk if it was taken over by its predatory neighbour”.

“History demands that it be stated that the Ryde City Council’s proposals were fatally flawed and without merit”, Ross Williams co convenor of SHHMC said. “These proposals have unnecessarily placed the community under enormous stress”, he said.
“Now that this decision has been made the communities of Hunters Hill and Ryde can get on with their long standing cooperative relationship” Ross Williams stated.

“A special thank you to all those who stood up to be counted” Phil Jenkyn co convenor said. “There has never been a greater community effort to save an area as in this battle. The precinct coordinators, group members and the many supporters of the Coalition – all have made a very significant contribution to this historic victory”, he said.
